Shanghai - City of Wonders & Excitement

You're in Shanghai NOW! With a history of just 800 years, this young city can't compete with Beijing and Xi'an on that score. But Shanghai's unique geographic location has helped turn this small fishing village into the most cosmopolitan, exciting and vibrant city in China and a major commercial and financial hub.

Millions of people, bunches of shopping malls and bustling vehicles describe this fast-growing city. But it's also a showcase for the great changes happening in China and a strong pointer to China's future. The Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower is Shanghai's landmark; the Bund is its symbol and Pudong New Area is the future.

These trappings of a modern metropolis stand alongside Shanghai Old Street and the Temple of the City God with their shops decorated in Ming and Qing Dynasty styles and the temple with its long history and many stories. Don't miss special local snacks, some of which date back hundreds of years, such as Nanxiang Xiaolong (mini steamed buns), pear candy and Sanhuang chicken.

At People's Square, tall shopping malls harmonize with Shanghai Museum, the Urban Planning Hall and the Grand Theater. Commerce mixes with culture; the present mixes with the past.

Many cities and towns are around Shanghai, such as Suzhou, Hangzhou and Zhouzhuang. Long histories and amazing views make them different from Shanghai. Many tourists use Shanghai as a base to go to these cities and towns for a weekend or one-day trip.
